The Shrubby Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) botanically belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a medium-growing perennial deciduous fruit-bearing shrub, thorny or not, as there are varieties without thorns (as well as errect, lateral or creeping), whose height can reach 2.5 to 3 m. Shrubby Blackberry looks for sunny or semi-shaded places - especially in areas where summer temperatures are very high - while it shows excellent resistance to very low temperatures, even when they reach -28 °C. It is grown in light, medium or heavy soils, with an acidic to neutral reaction (5.5-7, optimum: 6 -6.5), which drain well and contain high amounts of organic matter. Blackberries bloom from late Spring to early September, with white or whitish pink flowers, and bear fruit from the early Summer, in drupe-like clusters with fruits that are initially greenish, then red and finally black when ripe. The fruits are eaten fresh or used to make, among other things, jellies, jams and juices. It is recommended that they be harvested in the early hours of the morning and, if not used immediately, placed in the refrigerator.
