The Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) botanically belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a medium-growing perennial deciduous fruit-bearing shrub, thorny or not, as there are varieties without thorns (as well as errect, lateral or creeping), whose height can reach 1.8 to 2.5 m. Black Chokeberry looks for sunny or semi-shaded places - especially in areas where summer temperatures are very high - while it shows excellent resistance to very low temperatures, even when they reach -34 °C. It is grown in light, medium or heavy soils, with an acidic to alkaline reaction (5.1-7.5, optimum: 6-6.5), which drain well and contain high amounts of organic matter. Black Chokeberry bloom from mid to late spring, with white flowers, and bear fruit from early summer until August to September, when they ripen, with black berries. Due to the Black Chokeberry's tolerance to wet soils, this species is commonly used in mass plantings, in naturalized and woodland gardens, to control erosion in excessively wet soils, and is also utilized in the creation of plant windbreaks. Of course, it is also a dynamic alternative crop since its fruits are highly nutritious, and both they and other parts of the plant have great medicinal value.
