European Black Currant or Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) Bush

The European Black Currant or Cassis (Ribes nigrum) belongs botanically to the family Grossulariaceae. It is a small perennial deciduous fruit-bearing shrub, without thorns, which can reach a height of 1.5 to 2 m. The European Black Currant prefers sunny or semi-shaded places - especially in areas where temperatures are very high in summer - and is extremely resistant to frost and very low temperatures, even when they reach -40 °C. It is grown in light, medium or heavy soils, with a slightly acidic to alkaline reaction (6-8, optimum: 6.7-7), which drain well and contain high levels of organic matter. Blackcurrants flower in spring, with lilac or pinkish-grey flowers. If the variety is not self-fertile, a pollinating variety needs to be planted in order for the plants to produce fruit. Fruit set is observed from the beginning of summer, with black, spherical-shaped berry fruits. The fruit is eaten fresh, frozen or even dried. They have a rather sour and stewy taste and are highly nutritious.
