Giant White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) Plant - Tropical Ornamental Plants. The Giant White Bird of Paradise and/or Wild Banana, of tropical origin, belongs botanically to the Strelitziaceae family. It is native to areas of southern Africa as well as areas of Mozambique. It is an evergreen treelike plant with many stems-trunks and is small to medium-sized, reaching a height of about 15 m. It has a moderate growth rate, upright habit and a fan-like canopy shape. One of the main ornamental features of the plant is its impressive large leaves, reminiscent of those of the banana tree. They are simple, glossy, grey-green in colour, oblong-elliptic in shape, with a lamina length often reaching 2 m. The leaf laminae are often tear by the tension of the wind and then resemble giant feathers. Another prominent ornamental feature of the plant is its bird's head-like white flowers with blue bracts. Flowering occurs on mature individuals sporadically throughout the year but peaks from mid-spring to late summer. The Giant White Bird of Paradise is a fairly easy to grow thermophilic plant. It can be planted in a variety of outdoor environments provided that winter temperatures rarely fall below 0 °C and as low as -4 °C. Otherwise it is used as a houseplant. In the garden it can be planted in almost any soil type, as long as it has excellent drainage. It is used both in gardening and in landscape architecture, planted alone as a plant of particular beauty, in groups and in compositions with other plants. Thanks to its resistance to salt spray, it can even be planted in seaside gardens.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the palm and tropical plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, age and shape.
