Cabbage Tree (Cordyline australis-syn. Dracaena australis) Plant. The Cabbage Tree botanically belongs to the Asparagus family (Asparagaceae). It is native to several regions of New Zealand. It is an evergreen tree, large in size, with a height of up to about 20 m. It has a moderate growth rate, upright habit, a spherical shape of regular outline and medium density crown. The leaves are simple, leathery, narrowly lanceolate or lanceolate in shape, with entire margins, and are dark green in colour. The fragrant flowers, which appear from mid-spring to late summer, are white in colour, borne on a panicle inflorescence. The Cabbage Tree is a particularly easy-to-grow tree. It can be planted in a variety of outdoor environments as it can withstand low temperatures, urban air pollution, and is adaptable to almost any soil type as long as it has excellent drainage. It can be used in both gardening and landscape architecture as a specimen plant, in group plantings and compositions. It is also used as an indoor plant and, thanks to its resistance to salt sprays, it is even planted in seaside gardens.
