The Chinese Windmill Palm or Chusan Palm (Chamaerops excelsa - syn. Trachycarpus fortunei) botanically belongs to the Arecaceae or Palmae family. It is native to the Far East, mainly China and southern Japan. It first assumes a shrubby form which then changes to that of a tree. It is an evergreen, dioecious palm, fast-growing (if watered) and medium-sized, which can reach a height of 20 m in its natural habitat (in cultivation it does not exceed 8 m). The Chinese Windmill Palm or Chusan Palm always has a single trunk covered with brownish hairs, the density of which is reminiscent of flax. It has large, arching, compound palmate leaves with dark green leaflets which are pubescent on the underside. In the summer season it blooms with yellow or yellowish-orange extremely small female flowers borne on panicle inflorescences, and males on spike inflorescences. This is followed by small blue-brown or blue-greyish drupe fruits. Chinese Windmill Palm is one of the most cold hardy palms available. It is easily grown in any type of soil (except heavy clay), preferably fertile and moist, with excellent drainage. It is useful planted in parks, squares, street islands, sidewalks, and gardens, as well as in commercial areas.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the palm plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, age and shape. Large palms are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
