It is spherical in shape, becoming cylindrical over time. It has 20 to 40 distinct, slightly wavy, ribs. 6 to 9 radially arranged, inwardly curving spines and 1 to 4 central, straight, long and strongly reddish-brown spines emerge from the rounded areoles. Mexican Candy Barrel Cactus blooms in late spring to early summer, with beautiful bright yellow flowers that have bright purple stripes on the petals, borne from the top aureoles. The flowers are succeeded by edible small, fleshy pinkish fruits. Mexican Candy Barrel Cactus (Ferocactus histrix) is a hardy xerophyte plant suitable for potting, gravel garden soil or rock gardens. It is used in both gardening and landscape architecture to create - among other things - dry landscape compositions (xeriscaping).
