Mexican Giant Cardon or Elephant Cactus (Pachycereus pringlei) Plant - Cactuses & Succulents. It is undoubtedly one of the most imposing cacti, as it is the tallest of all, weighs several tons, and is one of the longest-lived, since it lives for several hundred years. It has a tree-like form with columnar, ribbed stems that branch either from the base or the trunk - at a height of 2 to 3 metres above the ground. Under favourable conditions it has 5-6 to 30 lateral stems. The quadrangular stems are bright green in colour, with 10 to 16 prominent ribs, which become more flattened over time. The ribs are covered by a close-set series of areoles with white glochids, from which 1 to 3 greyish central spines and 7 to 10 white radial spines grow. Mexican Giant Cardon (Elephant Cactus) blooms in early spring, with beautiful white flowers, which open both day and night, and are borne from the areoles just below the apex of the stem down to 30 or 40 cm from the apex. The flowers are succeeded by edible spherical fruits up to 7 cm long, covered with yellowish brown felt and bristle. Mexican Giant Cardon (Pachycereus pringlei) is an extremely hardy xerophyte plant suitable for potting, for gravel and stony garden soil or for rock gardens. It is used both in gardening and in landscape architecture to create - among other things - dry landscape compositions (xeriscaping) or as an emblematic dominant plant (focal point).
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the cactus, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large cacti are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
