Blue Barrel Cactus (Ferocactus glaucescens) Plant Plant - Cactuses & Succulents. Nice-looking cactus, slow-growing, with a ribbed stem, whose colour is glaucous to blue-green. It is spherical (barrel-like) or slightly cylindrical in shape. It often branches from the base, forming an attractive mound. It shows 11 to 15 distinct ribs, slightly wavy. Up to 7 radially arranged spines plus sometimes 1 central one, which curve inwards, arise from the brownish areoles. The Blue Barrel Cactus blooms in late spring to mid-summer, with beautiful and relatively large lemon-coloured flowers borne from the top aeroles. The flowers are succeeded by small, fleshy white or creamy colored fruits. The fruits are edible and are eaten fresh or cooked. The Blue Barrel Cactus (Ferocactus glaucescens) is a very hardy xerophyte plant suitable for potting, gravel garden soil or rock gardens. It is used in both gardening and landscape architecture to create - among other things - dry landscape compositions (xeriscaping).
