European Blueberry or Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) Bush

The European Blueberry or Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) belongs botanically to the Ericaceae family. It is a small-growing perennial deciduous fruit-bearing shrub, the height of which can reach 0.5 to 1.5 m. The European Blueberry prefers sunny or semi-shaded places - especially in areas where temperatures are very high in summer - and is extremely resistant to frost and very low temperatures, even when they reach -40 °C. It is grown in soils with excellent porosity, acidic to slightly acidic reaction (4.5-6, optimum: 4.5-5.5), which are moist and contain high amounts of organic matter. Bilberries bloom in late spring to early summer, with bell-shaped, blushing white or pink flowers. Fruiting occurs from late summer to September, with blue-black to purple-black spherical-shaped berry fruits. They have a sour taste and are eaten fresh, dried or cooked. They are highly nutritious and both they and other parts of the plant have great medicinal value.
