Lychee (Litchi chinensis) Fruit Tree

The Lychee (Litchi chinensis) is a monotypic species which belongs botanically to the Soapberry (Sapindaceae) family. It is a large perennial, evergreen, woody, fruit-bearing tropical tree that can grow to a height of 15 to 23 m, but in Mediterranean countries it will rarely exceed 3 to 4 m. The Lychee prefers sunny places and has a high resistance to high temperatures (>40 °C) and low resistance to low temperatures, with a minimum resistance of -5 °C - although its young shoots are damaged even at -1 °C. It is grown in fertile, acidic to neutral soils (5-7, optimum: 5.5-6.5), with excellent drainage. Lychees bloom from late winter to early spring, with yellow, white or greenish monoecious flowers in a panicle inflorescence. Fruiting occurs spring to mid-summer, with red spherical or ovoid drupe fruits. They have a sweet taste and are eaten fresh, dried, frozen or canned. In addition, their medicinal value is high.
