The Cornelian Cherry Dogwood (Cornus mas) belongs botanically to the Cornaceae family. It is a large perennial, deciduous, woody, fruit-bearing shrub or small tree that can grow to a height of 5 to 8 m. The Cornelian Cherry Dogwood prefers sunny or semi-shaded places - especially in areas where temperatures are very high in summer - and is very resistant to frost and very low temperatures, even when they reach -29 °C. It is grown in fertile, acidic to alkaline soils (5-8, optimum: 7-7.5), with excellent drainage. Cornelian Cherry Dogwoods bloom from late winter to early spring, with yellow flowers in a corymbose inflorescence. Fruiting occurs from late Summer to September, with red (yellow or violet - depending on variety) drupe fruits. They have tangy taste and are eaten fresh or used in processing to make jam and drinks. Both these and other parts of the plant are of great medicinal value and the plant in the form of a shrub or tree is also used in gardening and landscape architecture.
