Common Laburnum or Golden Rain (Laburnum anagyroides) Tree - Cold Hardy Trees. Golden Chain - as is another name of the plant - belongs botanically to the family Fabaceae or Leguminosae. It is native to Central and Southeastern Europe (and Greece) where it grows in calcareous soils. It is a large shrub or small deciduous tree, rather slow-growing, which is erect in appearance and has an irregularly ovoid canopy shape. The leaves are compound palmate consisting of 3 leaflets of oblong-ovoid shape. They are glaucous green in colour and their upper surface is smooth while the lower surface is hairy. The really particularly impressive flowering of the plant - which is monoecious - occurs in late spring. Its abundant, fragrant yellow flowers are borne on large, approximately 20 cm long, downward-hanging raceme inflorescences reminiscent of those of the Wisteria. The flowers are followed by brown-coloured legume fruits. Common Laburnum is an easy-to-grow tree. It can be planted in almost any type of soil, provided that it is alkaline and has excellent drainage, and the presence of organic matter is conducive to its growth. In very hot areas, it is recommended that all-day exposure to the sun be avoided. It can be used both in horticulture and in landscape architecture, planted as specimen, in groups and also in combination with other plants. However, in addition to its ornamental contribution, it also enriches the soil with nitrogen.
Note:
All parts of Laburnum anagyroides are highly poisonous, with those of the seeds being most harmful. It is therefore recommended to avoid planting it in places where children live or play.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the tree, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large trees are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
