Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana-syn. Gynerium argenteum) Plant - Grass-like Plants. The Pampas Grass botanically belongs to Gramineae or Poaceae family, and is native to South America - particularly the pampas of Argentina. It is a herbaceous, perennial and evergreen species, with a fast growth rate, arching-weeping habit and hemispherical shape, with a dense canopy and a height that can reach - if left unpruned - up to about 5 metres. One of the main ornamental features of the plant is its long, linear, arching leaves that form tussocks or clumps of grass. They are green throughout the growing season until autumn, when the entire foliage turns greenish-yellow at first and then, with the first cold, yellowish-brown tones. They are extremely sharp due to the serrated margins of their lamina. Another attractive ornamental feature of this dioecious plant are its compound spikelet, panicle-like inflorescences, which appear on stems from late summer and remain through the winter. The colour of the inflorescences, which resemble feather plume, ranges from creamy white to white. Pampas Grass is quite easy to grow, as it adapts to a variety of different environments. It seeks sunny locations and can withstand frost and low temperatures, drought, as well as almost any soil type, acidic to alkaline, as long as it drains well. And it is used in many ways by both gardening and landscape architecture. Among other things, it can even be planted in seaside gardens, as it has no problems with salt sprays.
Note:
The Cortaderia selloana is a highly invasive species and behaves as a difficult to control aggressive weed. For this reason it should not be planted outside urban areas.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, age and shape. Large plants are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
