Mexican Petunia (Ruellia brittoniana-syn. Ruellia simplex) Plant - Grass-like Plants. The Mexican Petunia botanically belongs to the Acanthaceae family and is native to areas of Mexico. It is a herbaceous, rhizomatous, perennial and evergreen plant, with a fast growth rate, round-oval shape and upright habit, with a dense canopy, reaching a height of about 1,30 m. The green glabrous leaves are simple, lanceolate, with serrated-undulate margins. Flowering is profuse, ornamental and particularly long, occurring from the first warm spells of spring to the last of autumn. The single flowers are violet-purple, campanulate, borne on a cyme inflorescence. The Mexican Petunia is a fairly easy-to-grow plant, adaptable to a variety of soil types and environments. However, it thrives in organic-rich soils, with good drainage, and in areas of high sunshine. It can be used in many ways, such as as a border plant, rock garden plant or planted with other herbs to create colour and other compositions. Thanks to its resistance to salt sprays, it can even be planted in seaside gardens.
Note:
The Ruellia brittoniana is a highly invasive species and behaves as a difficult to control aggressive weed. For this reason it should not be planted outside urban areas.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, age and shape. Large plants are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
