Mexican Grass Tree (Dasylirion longissimum) Succulent Plant - Succulents. Mexican Grass Trees belong botanically to the Asparagus family (Asparagaceae). They are highly ornamental, evergreen perennial succulents used mainly outdoors, planted in pots or directly in the garden soil. Although they are classified as succulents, their glaucous-green leaves are long (1,2-1,4 m) like elongated blades, arranged in a rosette and growing more or less symmetrically, giving the plant an almost spherical crown shape. The leaves grow from an upright or partially reclining trunk, which over the years becomes more or less like that of palms. Adults display an impressively long flowering stem (2-3 to 5 m) in summer, bearing a spike inflorescence with numerous white, brown, cream or brownish-yellow star-shaped small flowers arising from reddish buds. The cultivation requirements of the plants are minimal, as they are practically unaffected by pests or diseases and thrive in almost any type of soil (except heavy clay soils), slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, with excellent drainage. Mexican Grass Tree is one of the most widely used plants by gardeners and landscape architects - especially for planting in dryland (xeriscape) gardens. It is also highly resistant to drought and high temperatures and is not affected by salt spray, making it suitable for planting in coastal areas.
