Dumbcane (Dieffenbachia seguine 'Compacta') Plant. For more than a century it has been one of the most popular plants for interior decoration. Dumbcane belongs botanically to the Araceae family and is native to the tropical regions of the American continent, from Mexico to the north-central part of South America. It is a small to medium-sized rhizomatous species, which can reach a height of about 1.5 m. It is a perennial, herbaceous plant, erect in habit with an irregular outline of canopy. The foliage is the main ornamental feature of the Dumbcane. The leaves emerge from a reed-like stem at the base of the plant. They are large, simple, waxy, green in colour, variegated with white, cream or yellow spots and blotches. The flower, is a compound inflorescence of spathes semi-enclosed by a green spathe. Dumbcane is an easy-to-grow plant, has no serious pest and disease problems, has almost zero maintenance requirements, and can be planted outdoors where climatic conditions allow. Its growth is favoured when it is placed in semi-shaded areas, with high levels of humidity, where it does not receive direct sunlight, and in light, fertile soil or soil mixes with a high organic matter content. The 'Compacta' variety is more ornamental than the standard variety.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large plants are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
