Boston Fern or Sword Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) Plant. A timeless indoor and outdoor ornamental, the Boston Fern or Sword Fern belongs to the Nephrolepidaceae family. It is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, showing broad adaptability. It is a small-sized pteridophyte, which can grow to a height of just over 1 m. Boston Fern is a perennial, spreading and erect habit plant that forms dense clumps. Naturally, the foliage is the dominant ornamental element of the plant. The fronds, which form rosettes, are borne on short stems. They are large, pinnately compound (trifoliate), arching and light green in colour. Boston Fern is a fairly easy-to-grow plant, has no serious pest and disease problems, has almost no maintenance requirements and can be planted outdoors. For its growth, semi-shady and/or shady areas and locations are selected, with high levels of atmospheric humidity, and the soil or soil mixture must be moist but free of waterlogging. The Boston Fern is best used planted in the garden or placed inside homes, offices and business premises.
