Bird's Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus) Plant. Of particular ornamental value for indoor and outdoor use, Bird's Nest Fern belongs to the Aspleniaceae family. It is native to the tropical regions of the Asian continent, East Africa, some Pacific islands and Australia. It is a small-sized epiphyte, which of course is also grown in pots, that can reach a height of about 2 m. Bird's Nest Fern is a perennial, of erect habit and has an open symmetrical crown. As with all pteridophytes, its dominant ornamental element is the foliage. However, the rosette-forming fronds are more reminiscent of those of a banana than of a typical fern. They are large, simple, glossy, wavy, lanceolate-ovate in shape with entire margins. They have a pale green colour in the lamina which is intersected by the easily discernible decorative black-brown midrib. It should be noted that in the centre of the rosette there is an opening, which resembles a bird's nest (hence the English common name), where organic material can accumulate. Bird's Nest fern is a fairly easy plant to grow, has no serious pest and disease problems, has almost no maintenance requirements and can be planted outdoors. For its growth, areas and locations rich in organic matter, semi-shaded and/or shaded, with high levels of atmospheric humidity are selected, and the soil or soil mixture must be moist but free of waterlogging. Bird's Nest Fern can be planted in the garden or placed inside homes, offices and business premises.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large plants are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
