Maidenhair Tree is one of the oldest plants in the world. Slightly altered from the Jurassic period, it is a large tree, which, although classified as conifers, does not have needle-like leaves but is broad-leaved and even deciduous. It has separate male and female trees (Dioecious), with the latter producing apricot-like fruits, which have an unpleasant odor when they mature.
Because of this, only males are planted for ornamental purposes. Ginkgo biloba cultivation is extremely easy, since it adapts to a variety of soil-climate types, is particularly resistant to pollution, as well as drought, low temperatures and frost. Also, one of its most important features is that it does not have any problems with pests and diseases. In addition, it is a medicinal plant, preparations of which are used for the treatment of various diseases, especially dementia.
In Greece, it is not particularly well known, but both its ornamental value and its durability impose somehow its spread.
It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, age and shape. Large trees are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
