The Loquat Tree or Chinese Plum Tree (Eriobotrya japonica) belongs botanically to the genus Eriobotrya and the family Rosaceae. It is a small evergreen fruit tree whose height can reach 5 to 8 m. Looks for sunny places, in areas with mild climates - although the tree has remarkable resistance to low temperatures (-7 to -10 °C). It is cultivated in many soil types, but performs best in medium soils, which are acidic to slightly alkaline, and drain well. The Loquat Tree has large, simple, leathery, oblong, serrated green leaves, and hermaphroditic flowers, yellowish white, aromatic and self-ferile. It blooms from September to December, is pollinated by insects (bees, etc.) and ripens its fruit, which are drupes, from April to June. It bears fruit from the 4th to the 7th year of cultivation, reaches normal yields around the 11th to the 12th year, remaining productive until the age of 40 to 50 years. The Loquat fruits are nutritious and delicious, for those who like the sour taste, while their color is yellowish orange. The Loquat Tree is also used in both gardening and landscape architecture.
