Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos spp.) Plant - Potted Kangaroo Paws. The Kangaroo Paws are native to Australia and botanically belong to the Haemodoraceae family. They are herbaceous, rhizomatous, perennial, evergreen plants of medium height and growth rate. The Anigozanthos spp. has a clustered habit, due to the long, linear-lanceolate leaves, which grow directly from the upper side of the rhizome as rosettes. The dominant ornamental feature is the beautiful and unusual-looking flowers, borne on panicle inflorescences with a long floral stem. The flowers of Kangaroo Paw are zygomorphic, tubular in shape and are formed by uneven lobes of the perianth (hence the origin of the first part - άνισος/anisos - of the Latinised Ancient Greek word of the genus). The flowering is rich both in quantity of flowers and in duration, the plants beginning to bloom in late spring and ceasing with the first cold of autumn. In fact, if grown in greenhouse conditions it is possible to flower all year round. The Kangaroo Paw is a hardy and easy-to-grow plant for areas with a mild climate, where winter temperatures rarely fall below 0 °C. It seeks sunny positions or half-shade; however, in the latter, the intensity of the colours of the flowers is reduced. It thrives in all types of soil (except clay soils), medium acidic to neutral, which drain very well. It is used both in horticulture and in landscape architecture to create attractive colour areas. It has relatively good drought resistance and high resistance to high temperatures, and is not affected by salt sprays, making it suitable for planting in coastal areas.
Note:
Anisoganthus plants are the products of hybridisation, usually between Anigozanthos manglesii and Anigozanthos flavidus and are available in various colours (Red, Yellow, Orange, Pink).
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, age and shape. Large plants are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
