Wire Vine (Muehlenbeckia complexa) Climbing Plant - Vine Flowering Plants. The Wire Vine belongs botanically to the family of Buckwheats (Polygonaceae). It is native to several regions of New Zealand. It is a sturdy, medium-sized climbing (or creeping) plant, which, thanks to its twining stems, can reach a height of about 10 m, supported on trees or surfaces. Otherwise, and if it is not supported, it will spread or climb on its own and reach a height of up to 30 cm. The Muehlenbeckia complexa is perennial and semi-evergreen, with a fast growth rate, high-density crown and a spreading habit. The leaves are alternate, simple, smooth-textured, ellirtic in shape with entire margins, whose lamina is green in colour. The dioecious flowers, borne on raceme inflorescences, are white and greenish-yellow in colour, stellate in shape and appear from late summer to mid-autumn. The Wire Vine is an easy-to-grow plant, has no serious pest and disease problems and has minimal maintenance requirements. It is utilized as an ornamental climber to create a hedgee, as well as on pergolas or trellises. It is also planted as specimen, or in group plantings and compositions. Its high resistance to salt sprays additionally allows it to be planted in seaside gardens. It is also an excellent ground cover plant.
