Scouring Horsetail (Equisetum hyemale) Plant - Aquatic, Pond & Wetland Plants. Perennial herbaceous plant of considerable ornamental value, which forms extensive clusters over time. The genus Equisetum is the only surviving member of the family Equisetaceae, which belongs to the ferns. The genus is often referred to as a living fossil, as it includes some of the oldest species that first appeared in the late Palaeozoic century and survive to the present day. Scouring Horsetail has a rapid growth rate, small to medium size, and an upright appearance. The scale-like leaves are tiny, growing from the nodes of erect green shoots that do not branch, forming a narrow blackish-green ring. Like the ferns, the plant has no flowers or fruits but reproduces by spores, which are enclosed within whorled organs, cones or strobili. The strobili are borne at the top of fertile shoots. Scouring Horsetail (Equisetum hyemale) is an easy-to-grow and very hardy plant that is adapted to a variety of soil types. It is used both in gardening and in landscape architecture to create, among other things, a variety of compositions, particularly in the modern style.
Note:
Equisetum hyemale is a highly invasive species and behaves as a difficult to control aggressive weed. For this reason it should not be planted outside urban areas.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, age and shape. Large plants are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
