The genus Equisetum is the only surviving member of the family Equisetaceae, which belongs to the ferns. The genus is often referred to as a living fossil, as it includes some of the oldest species that first appeared in the late Palaeozoic century and survive to the present day. Scouring Horsetail has a rapid growth rate, small to medium size, and an upright appearance. The scale-like leaves are tiny, growing from the nodes of erect green shoots that do not branch, forming a narrow blackish-green ring. It is used both in gardening and in landscape architecture to create, among other things, a variety of compositions, particularly in the modern style.

Equisetum hyemale is a highly invasive species and behaves as a difficult to control aggressive weed. For this reason it should not be planted outside urban areas.
