Red Headed Irishman rubrispina (Mammillaria spinosissima f. rubrispina) Plant - Cactuses & Succulents. Extremely popular, ornamental perennial cactus plant of small size with an erect form. The rubrispina form has a rapid growth rate, it is usually a solitary cactus although it sometimes shows many lateral stems from the base, whose colour is bright green. The cylindrical-shaped stems show grooves due to small conical tubercles - tubercles arranged in spirals. A few soft, white hairs grow in the area (axil) around the bases of the tubercles. At the top of the tubercles are the areoles, from which 20 to 25 short, white-coloured spines, more like hairs, grow radially. The 12 to 15 straight central spines are copper-red, stronger than the radial ones and thicker at the base, being 10 to 12 mm long. The central spines are largely responsible for the popularity of the plant, as they completely occupy the top of the stem, giving it an attractive reddish colour. Of course, the flowers also contribute to making Red Headed Irishman rubrispina a sought-after plant. The flowers are mauve-purple in colour and form an impressive ring just below the top of the stems. They grow from the areoles and appear from late winter to late spring. The flowers are succeeded by purple-red fruits, containing many brownish seeds. Red Headed Irishman rubrispina (Mammillaria spinosissima f. rubrispina) is a hardy xerophyte plant suitable for potting, gravel or stony garden soil or rock gardens. It is used in both gardening and landscape architecture to create - among other things - dry landscape compositions (xeriscaping).
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the cactus, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large cacti are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
