Flaming Sword (Vriesea splendens-syn. Lutheria splendens) Plant. An extremely popular flowering epiphyte often found as an ornamental, especially indoors. Flaming Sword botanically belongs to the Bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae), and is native from the rainforests of eastern Colombia to the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago. It is a small-sized species, which can reach a height of about 90 cm. It is a perennial, evergreen, arching plant with relatively sparse canopy. The leaves, which are arranged in a funnel-shaped rosette, are smooth, lanceolate to linear, with entire margins and greyish-green or purple in colour with dark green to reddish-brown horizontal stripes. From the heart of the rosette emerges the floral stalk, from which grows a highly decorative set of bracts, almost wing-like in shape, up to 45 cm long. Their colour is red (in the various varieties of the plant they may be yellow, orange, pink, etc.). From the spike inflorescence will develop the true flowers of the Flaming Sword, which are tubular in shape and yellow in colour and last for many months. This is followed by the fruits, which mark the death of the parent plant, as it is a monocarpic species. However, new plants will grow in its place, since new offshoots (pups) will have already appeared at the rosette base. Although it is an epiphytic and aerial plant, the Flaming Sword is very well adapted to growing in a pot. For its smooth growth, the foliage can be sprayed or the pot watered to add water and nutrients, regularly or relatively regularly - depending on the conditions - and after the soil or soil mixture has dried out. It should also be placed in positions of indirect exposure to sunlight and/or enhanced shade. Flaming Sword is best used planted in pots and containers indoors, and can also be planted outdoors where climatic conditions allow.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large plants are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
