European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) Tree - Ornamental Trees. The European Hornbeam belongs botanically to the family of the Betulaceae. It originates from Europe and is distributed from the West of the continent to the Caucasus. In Greece it is native to the mountainous areas. It is a deciduous tree of large size, whose height can reach up to about 30 m. It is a slow-growing plant, which has upright habit and a narrow pyramidal canopy shape initially, becoming spherical, oval or vase-shaped over time. The leaves are simple, glabrous, ovate to ovoid-elliptical in shape with double serrate margins and a acuminate apice. They are green on the upper surface and paler green on the lower surface, but in autumn they take on attractive orange, or yellow hues. Flowering occurs from mid to late spring. The flowers are monoecious, and borne on a catkin inflorescence, yellowish for males and greenish for females. The European Hornbeam is a fairly easy-to-grow tree. It can be planted in almost any soil type as long as it has good drainage and also retains the necessary moisture. However, it thrives in medium consistency soils, which have a very acidic pH, and not very high summer temperatures. It is used both in gardening and landscape architecture, planted as a specimen, in groups and in compositions with other trees. It can be used to create excellent tree rows and hedge rows.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the tree, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large trees are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
