Caper Bush Packet 10g Seeds (Capparis spinosa). The Caper Bush (Capparis spinosa) botanically belongs to the Capparaceae family. It is a perennial, deciduous and thorny plant, which reaches a height of about 1 meter. It has a spreeding-creeping shrub appearance, yellow thorns, oval-shaped gray-green leaves, and large fragrant white flowers, which are borne from late Spring to early Autumn. It grows in places that have full sunshine, very low humidity, and an extremely hot summer, withstanding temperatures even above 40° Celsius. In winter, it does not withstand frosts, but it can survive prolonged and without sharp fluctuations in cold. In the first 2 years, it needs minimal watering, but at constant repeated intervals, and then very rarely if at all. It is widely used in traditional medicine either in the form of a decoction (tea), or in the form of a poultice or ointment. As a tea it is taken to treat gastrointestinal infections, diarrhea, gout, rheumatism, colds and stomach aches. As a poultice or ointment it is applied to treat hemorrhoids, bruises and other skin diseases. In cooking, it is used for the edible flowering buds, which are often used as a spice, and for the fruits (caper berries), where both are usually consumed as a pickle. Edible buds and fruits are harvested during the Summer and Autumn seasons.
