Cactus Red Bunny Ears (Opuntia rufida-syn. Opuntia microdasys var. rufida) Plant - Cactuses & Succulents. An interesting perennial cacti with a high ornamental value, which usually forms clusters. It has a medium growth rate, small size, upright bushy form and is strongly branched. The green, flattened, elongated to spherical cladodes (transformed stems -"leaves") have only rare, typical spines. The young cladodes usually grow in twos from the mature ones and give the impression of bunny ears - hence the English common name for the plant, Bunny Ears. The cladodes display rounded areoles in a diagonal arrangement of 8 to 13, which bear numerous glochids (hair-like small spines), initially orange-red in colour that turn grey over time. The cactus flowers occurs from spring to early summer. The cup-shaped flowers are pale yellow in colour which gradually changes to golden yellow to orange. They grow on the top of the terminal cladodes when they are a year old and are 4-6 to 7.5 cm long and another 4 to 7.5 cm in diameter. The flowers are succeeded by edible, reddish-green to bright red berry fruits. The fruits, which are 2 to 3,5 cm long and 1,5 to 2 cm in diameter, are fleshy, spherical to oval and have areoles with many dense glochids. Cactus Red Bunny Ears (Opuntia rufida) is a hardy xerophyte plant suitable for potting, for gravel or stony garden soil or for rock gardens. It is used in both gardening and landscape architecture to create, among other things, dry landscape compositions (xeriscaping).
Note: In the island complex of the Cyclades, the plant has shown an invasive, weedy character and should not be planted.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the cactus, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large cacti are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
