Peacock Plant (Calathea makoyana)

The Urn Plant (Aechmea fasciata – syn. Billbergia fasciata) originates in Brazil and belongs to the family Bromeliaceae. It is a perennial, rhizomatous epiphytic, of small growth and of great ornamental value. Decorative are both its fleshy oblong-lanceolate leaves, green in color, varying in transverse gray-silver stripes, and its striking pink flower, which remains for many months and is formed by its bracts, through which the small its size and blue genuine botanical flowers appears. The Urn Plant is an easy cultivation plant, prefers semi-shady places and wants the soil (if the climate allows it can be planted in the garden) or the soil mixture to have excellent drainage. Mealybugs, scales and mites can sometimes infect the plant, but are treated with appropriate preparations. Characteristic of the Urn Plant is that when the flowering is over the mother plant dies and is replaced by its abundant offsets.
