The Pawpaw botanically belongs to the Caricaceae family. It is native to various regions of Mexico and Central America. Although it looks like a tree, it is actually a giant herbaceous, perennial and evergreen, reaching a height of about 10 m. It has a fast growth rate, errect habit, umbrella shape, and medium-dense canopy. It usually consists of a trunk, which never forms a true woody tissue, at the top of which the leaves sprout. The large leaves are alternately arranged, simple, smooth, palmate, and green in colour. The Pawpaw flowers sporadically throughout the year. The fragrant flowers, which are produced along the trunk from the leaf axils, are mainly dioecious, and less frequently monoecious, but also hermaphroditic, white or yellowish-white in colour. The edible fruits, which strongly resemble melons in shape, ripen when they are as soft as a ripe avocado, and their skin has acquired an amber to orange tint. The edible part (mesocarp and endocarp) has a creamy texture and tastes somewhere between melon and peach. The Pawpaw thrives in places with a tropical or semi-tropical climate, fertile, humusy soils that are consistently cool but have excellent drainage, while in terms of exposure, full sunshine is conducive to excellent fruit production - however, if the plants are grown for ornamental purposes, they will tolerate semi-shady positions.
