Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla - syn. Araucaria excelsa) is a very imposing evergreen coniferous, rapid growth rate, which often exceeds 25 m, while it can be up to 70 m if it is in ideal conditions. It has a pyramidal shape, a singletrunk, foliage intensely green which is characterized as a fine texture. Its cultivation is not difficult, as long as it is planted in areas where the minimum winter temperature does not exceed -1 °C. Of course, it should be noted that the Norfolk Island Pine established trees bear much lower temperatures, but their limit is at -6.5 °C. In terms of soil, it has no particular requirements, adapts to a variety of soil types, as long as it drains well, but thrives on deep soils that are moderate fertility and which have excellent porosity. The Norfolk Island Pine is extremely resistant to drought, strong winds, soil salinity and saltwater, properties that make it particularly suited for planting in seaside areas as well as in the Greek islands. It may not be well known but the Norfolk Island Pine has a special charisma: it is one of the few conifers that can grow as indoor plants, whether they are stores, offices, urban or country houses. Norfolk Island Pine is a valuable tree for gardening and landscape architecture and is therefore properly exploited, planted alone as a dominant element or in groups. Among other things, it is also offered for planting in order to create extremely attractive and resistant plant hedges. A tree really unique, Norfolk Island Pine has a place in any Mediterranean garden.
