Kermes Oak (Quercus coccifera) Shrub - Plants and Shrubs for Gardening. The Kermes Oak belongs botanically to the Fagaceae family. It is an evergreen plant, which grows naturally in the Greek area, of very slow growth-rate, which acquires a spherical-irregular shape. The leaves are simple, leathery and shiny, ellipsoidal-ovoidal in shape, with serrated-edged margins, and their colour is green. Flowering occurs in mid to late spring with yellow flowers of no ornamental value, borne on a catkin inflorescence. The flowers are succeeded by brown-coloured fruits, the acorns. Kermes Oak is an easy to grow shrub. It grows in almost any soil type, acidic to alkaline reaction - even calcareous - which have excellent drainage. It can be used both in gardening and in landscape architecture, planted as specimen, in groups and also in compositions with other plants.
