Japanese Camellia (Camellia japonica) Shrub - Varieties - Plants and Shrubs for Gardening. The Japanese Camellia remains a classic and extremely popular flowering plant, with over 3000 varieties. Botanically it belongs to the Theaceae family (syn. Camelliaceae), and - despite its name - it originates from China. It is a woody, evergreen, perennial shrub or small to medium-sized, slow-growth rate, oval-shaped tree. The leaves are simple, leathery, elliptic-ovate in shape, with slightly serrated margins, and are green in colour. The magnificent long flowering period is usually from mid-autumn to late spring (depending on the variety) with beautiful, stellate flowers of various colours of great ornamental value. And although its flowers generally lack fragrance, however breeders have managed to create varieties with slightly fragrant flowers such as Camellia japonica 'Blood of China' and almost all the plants in the 'Kramer's' series. The flowers are succeeded by brown-purple capsule fruits. The Japanese Camellia is a relatively easy-to-grow shrub. It grows in almost any soil type, acidic to slightly acidic - but not calcareous - with excellent drainage and a high organic matter content. It is recommended to be planted in places that are not exposed to air currents. The Japanese Camellia can be used both in gardening and in landscape architecture, planted as specimen, in groups and also in compositions with other plants. It makes very attractive hedges - formal or informal.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, age and shape. Large shrubs are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
