The Grapefruit botanically belongs to the family Rutaceae. It is native to the Barbados Islands and is a natural hybrid that owes its existence to an accidental cross between C. × sinensis and C. Maxima. It is a perennial and evergreen citrus tree, reaching a height of about 8 m. It has a fast growth rate, upright habit, an oval shape and a medium-dense canopy. The pleasantly fragrant leaves are alternate arranged, simple, leathery, ellipsoidal-ovate in shape, with entire margins, and are green in colour. The tree flowers from late winter to mid-spring. The monoecious fragrant flowers, which are produced on raceme inflorescences, are stellate and white in colour. Its edible fruits are initially green in colour, but when ripe the skin takes on a yellow tinge - often with pink spots. The highly juicy edible part is yellow or reddish in colour, depending on the variety, and tastes rather sweet and sour. The Grapefruit thrives in places with a tropical or subtropical climate, on fertile, humusy, sandy-loamy soils that are consistently cool but have excellent drainage and, as regards exposure, full sunshine is conducive to the production of high-quality fruit.
