GLOSSY ABELIA – THE PLANT, THE CARE AND USE OF
Description
The Glossy Abelia originated in Asia from now on and spread over the last decades throughout the world. It is a particularly attractive shrub of moderate growth, of spherical-hemispherical shape, with a beautiful, shiny, glossy foliage that can be lost in a harsh winter but will reappear in the coming spring. From the middle of May until the first cold is flooded by abundant small tubular whithish-pink flowers - of soft aroma, which becomes more intense in the evening - which almost cover the plant.
It is propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings. Ambelia's soil requirements are minimal, as it grows equally well in various soil types but thrives on medium textured soils irrigated with good quality water. If hardened, it is drought tolerant. It can withstand low temperatures but it must be avoided in areas that are frosty pockets.
In the pot, which needs to drain well, a suitable soil mix for the planting of Ambelia is one that is that composed of humus, compost and horticultural grade pumice stone in 2:2:1 ratios respectively. It does not need special care beyond the fertilizing in the early spring with a fertilizer of the 1: 1: 1 type which, when the flowers appear, can be replaced with another type of 1:1:1.5. It is useful to make 2-3 preventive sprays for scale insects. It is rarely attacked by other pests or diseases.
Use in Gardening and Landscape Architecture
Abelia, as a free growth shrub, can be planted individually or in groups in the garden and lawns as well as compositions with other shrubs of different species. Because it shows fine foliage texture, when it is not blooming to emerge, it is advisable to combine it with shrubs or trees of coarser or medium texture
It can be combined with herbaceous and / or roses (such as geraniums, chrysanthemums, etc.) where it is planted in the last row.
Its tolerance to pruning makes it one of the best plants for low height hedges. The low height hedge of Abelia is dense and beautiful. Planting distance to create a hedge is 1 plant per 0,30 cm while for higher 1 plant per 0,50 - 0,80 m.
With the appropriate pruning it can take various shapes such as the pyramid or cone as well as become a small particularly attractive, because of its rich flowering, tree.
