European Smoketree ‘Red Purple’ is an impressive perennial deciduous shrub, thanks to the deep reddish coloration of its leaves and the unique beauty of its unusual blooming. Especially the latter, perfectly justifies the English common name of the Smoketree bush, since it looks like a cloud of smoke, which changes colors until the completion of the bloom, starting with violet purple and ending with grayish brown. With regard to the leaves, it is worth highlighting its great color contribution in the autumn period, with its orange-purple hues.

For the rest, it is easy to cultivate shrub, which grows even the most poor, rocky or gravelly soils, which of course have excellent drainage. Its resistance to drought is high, as is the air pollution of cities, and yet another element that makes it stand out is its remarkable ability to maintain its red-leaf intensity firmly planted either in cold or hot areas . From pests and diseases it does not encounter serious problems, and sometimes the appearance of mildew is easily treated with the use of appropriate formulations.

European Smoketree ‘Red Purple’ is extremely long-lived - lives for more than 50 years, but reports of older plants of its kind are also not missing. A plant indigenous to the southeastern side of the Mediterranean countries is entitled and must have a place in every Greek garden.
