The Common Walnut (Juglans regia) belongs botanically to the genus Juglans and the family of Juglandaceae. It is a large, centuries-old deciduous tree whose height can reach 35 m. It is cultivated at an altitude of 0 to 600 m and in very deep, fertile, sandy loam soils, which are acidic to alkaline, and drain well. It has a strong stalk-type root system, trunk up to 2.5 m in diameter, and large compound leaves. The Common Walnut is a monoecious tree that bears together male and female flowers but in different places. However, although pollen is fertile, due to the occurrence of the phenomenon of dichogamy in some varieties, the cooperation of trees of different varieties is recommended for the implementation of pollination. The Common Walnut blooms in Spring and ripens its fruits, the nuts, which are drupes, from the end of September to the middle of October, depending on the variety. It bears fruit from the 5th to the 8th year of cultivation, to reach normal yields in the 3rd decade of its life.
