Charity Oregon Grape Holly (Mahonia x media 'Charity'-syn. Berberis x media 'Charity') Shrub - Flowering Shrubs. The Charity Oregon Grape Holly is the product of hybridisation between Berberis oiwakensis (formerly Mahonia lomariifolia) and Berberis japonica (formerly Mahonia japonica). It is a medium-sized shrub, perennial and evergreen, growing up to 3 m tall. It has a medium growth rate, upright habit and oval shape. Its spiny leaves are alternate arranged, dark green, odd pinnately compound, ovate in shape, having a leathery texture, with dentate-undulated margins. The flowering of the plant occurs from early to late winter - a time when few plants bloom. Its monoecious, fragrant flowers, borne on raceme inflorescences, are yellow in colour and stellate in shape. Ornamental fruits (violet berries) follow. The Charity Oregon Grape Holly is quite easy to grow, as long as it is not exposed directly to the sun. Its growth is favoured when placed in semi-shaded areas, and fertile, organic-rich soils with excellent drainage. It can be used both in gardening and in landscape architecture, planted as specimen, in groups and also in compositions with other plants.
