A highly ornamental cactus with spiral stems, which is considered a natural mutation of the species forbesii - a view, however, disputed by some botanists. It is a slow-growing, medium-sized perennial variety with a bushy or tree-like form. Numerous upright stems of dark green colour grow from the base, with a candelabra-like arrangement. The stems are covered with waxy bloom and have 5 to 9 ribs. From the aeroles 2 to 5 spines emerge radially and 1 to 3 centrally. They are reddish in colour and the central spines are more robust than the radial ones. The Spiral Cactus 'Spiralis' blooms on summer nights, with large, white-pink flowers. The flowers are succeeded by red-coloured decorative fruits. The Spiral Cactus 'Spiralis' (Cereus forbesii 'Spiralis') is a very hardy xerophyte plant suitable for potting, gravel garden soil or rock gardens. It is used in both gardening and landscape architecture to create - among other things - dry landscape compositions (xeriscaping) or as a focal point plant because of its iconic presence.
