Dragon Fruit Cactus (Selenicereus undatus-syn. Hylocereus undatus) - Cactuses & Succulents. Valuable cactus, which is also an important agricultural crop as it produces particularly nutritious and sweet-sweetish fruits. It is a perennial hemiepiphytic and lithophyte - i.e. it has the ability to grow on other plants and rocks - but it can also grow directly from the ground. If supported it grows like a vine, otherwise it is creeping behaves as a ground cover plant. Its light green to bright green stems are triangular in cross-section and are divided into individual segments with wavy margins. Each segment can reach a length of up to 1,2 m, and each stem can reach a total length of up to 10 m. It has 3 elongated ribs, on which the white and woolly areoles appear bearing the spines. Flowering of the Dragon Fruit in tropical climates occurs 3 to 6 times a year, and in temperate climates from late spring to early summer. The fragrant flowers appear at the tip of the stems, are large and white and open for only a few hours, from evening to early morning. The fruit of the plant, which is fuchsia-red in colour, is elongated, fleshy and edible. The Dragon Fruit (Selenicereus undatus-syn. Hylocereus undatus) is not only an agricultural crop but also a wonderful ornamental plant for pots or gardens. In connection with its name this should also be said: although it is often called Pitaya, this is probably a mistake, as this is the name usually given to the fruits of species belonging to the genus Stenocereus. On the contrary, Dragon Fruit - as here - produced by species of the genus Selenicereus (syn. Hylocereus) are called Pitahaya.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the cactus, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large cacti are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
