The Pencil Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens var. pyramidalis) is one of the two forms of the common Mediterranean Cypress with upright branches, also called the male Cypress. It is an emblematic, long-lived, large evergreen coniferous tree, inextricably linked to the Mediterranean landscape and especially to Greece, where it was known since ancient times. The relevant myth even states that he owes his name to the young Cyparissus from Kos, who, unable to bear the grief caused by the loss of his beloved deer, asked the gods to die, and the god Apollo, whose he was favored, he transformed him into a tree so that in this way he would become immortal. So according to this perception the Cypresses were associated with mourning for it and are planted in cemeteries. But despite being so closely associated with cemeteries, Cypress trees are extremely elegant with many other uses. Having dense vegetation and dark green foliage, they are suitable for planting in any kind of green space, from gardens of private homes to parks and squares, as well as for the creation of windbreaks or for the reforestation of degraded or burned forests. In addition, as they are very hardy and adapt to a variety of different soil and climatic conditions, they grow even in dry and barren, acidic or alkaline soils and in sunny and / or semi-shady places. Finally, for gardening and landscape architecture, Cypress is a valuable tree, since it does not mean a garden of a Mediterranean character that does not include it.
