New Zealand Hemp Red (Phormium tenax "Purpureum") Plant

The New Zealand Hemp Red or New Zealand Flax (Phormium tenax), is an evergreen, perennial, rhizomatous herbaceous plant with large, elongated - lanceolate leaves. Most of them are upright, while some of them bend from the upper half downwards, and their color is red. It blooms in summer, but its flowering is not of great ornamental interest. It is an easy to grow plant, growing in any light or medium texture and rich in organic matter soil that drains, even in areas with fairly cold winters. It wants sunny places, but it can also be placed in light shades. The New Zealand Hemp is used both in gardening and in landscape architecture, as an individual plant, in group plantings, on slopes, as well as for planting in coastal areas.
