Natal Plum (Carissa macrocarpa) Shrub

Natal Plum is an evergreen thorny shrub of medium height. It bears green, leathery leaves and white, fragrant flowers that appear from mid-spring to autumn. They are followed by red ornamental fruits that last throughout the winter and while they resemble blueberries, they are not eaten due to their toxicity. The round dark green leaves grow in a strange way as if one grows out from the other, creating continuous garlands that extend outward. It grows in sunny, frost-protected locations, even in relatively dry soils. It grows at a moderate rate which increases only with a constant and balanced use of fertiliser. Natal Plum can be planted in groups, in arrangements, in beds with other plants or even in rock gardens and is also suitable for coastal areas.
