Lacy Phacelia Seeds 1kg Bag (Phacelia tanacetifolia 'Balo'). Lacy Phacelia belongs botanically to the Boraginaceae family or otherwise to the Hydrophyllaceae family. It is used in beekeeping, as it is an excellent melliferous plant, and also as a green manure plant, as an ornamental and/or for cut flowers. It is an annual species, reaching a height of approximately 1.3 metres and a diameter of 0.6 metres. The variety 'Balo' has improved characteristics. The bell-shaped, blue-purple flowers are borne on a spike inflorescence. Flowering is long and profuse, starting in about mid-spring and ending in early autumn. It thus provides the beekeeper with an abundant source of food for bees, and at a time when wild flowers do not contribute. And if conditions are favourable, the bees can produce up to 1 litre of honey per year from a cultivated area of 20 m². The Lacy Phacelia plant grows in a variety of soil types but thrives in cool sandy or shallow rocky and stony soils with excellent drainage. In practice it does not have any problems with pests and diseases. For sowing, because the seed is very fine, river sand is added together with it in the ratio of 1 stremma: 1 kg of seed: 4 kg of sand. The plant is irrigated only during periods of severe drought. Fertilisation may be applied for the development of flowering.
Note:
Because Phacelia tanacetifolia, native to the southern United States and Mexico, self-seeds, the Lacy Phacelia growers should be especially careful not to contribute to the spread of the plant, which is highly invasive. Already invasive populations are recorded in North Central Greece, South Pindos, Central Greece, Peloponnese, Cyclades and other islands of the East, North and West Aegean. For this reason it is recommended that the seeds be collected by the grower himself in order to avoid further spreading.
