The Japanese Pear or Nashi Pear Tree (Pyrus pyrifolia) belongs botanically to the genus Pyrus and the family Rosaceae. It is a small deciduous fruit tree whose height can reach 9 to 10 m. Seeks sunny places, at an altitude of 100 to 1400 m, and cold areas (-29 to -34 °C) but not frost-hit during the flowering season. It is grown in fertile, medium-textured soils, which are acidic to slightly alkaline, and well drained. The Japanese Pear or Nashi Pear Tree has serrated, elliptical-heart-shaped leaves of intense green color, and hermaphroditic flowers, white, largely indigenous. It blooms in spring and ripens its fruits, also known as Japanese Apples, from mid-August to early September, depending on the variety. Nashi Pear fruits are extremely nutritious and delicious, and have the shape of an apple and the taste of a pear.
