African Violet (Saintpaulia ionantha) Flowering Plant. A widespread and attractive flowering plant found as an ornamental mainly indoors. African Violet is botanically a member of the Gesneria family (Gesneriaceae), and is native to the rainforests of Tanzania and Kenya. It is a small-sized species, which can reach a height of up to about 40 cm. It is a perennial, evergreen plant, erect in habit with relatively dense canopy. The leaves, which are arranged in rosettes, are simple, fleshy, fuzzy, orbicular-ovate in shape with crenate margins, green on the upper surface and violet on the lower surface. The flowers, which are the dominant ornamental feature of the African Violet, are borne on a dichasium cyme inflorescence. They are single or double, trumpet, tubular or star-shaped, and are Blue, Pink, Purple, Violet and White in colour (in some varieties they may be bicoloured). African Violet is a relatively easy plant to grow, and can be planted outdoors where climate conditions allow. Its growth is favoured when it is placed in indirect sunlight or in shade, has a high moisture content and the soil or soil mixture is rich in organic matter and has excellent drainage. African violet, in the right climatic environment, can flower all year round.
► It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, and age. Large plants are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
