Pomegranate Tree (Punica granatum)

The Pomegranate Tree (Punica granatum) belongs botanically to the genus Punica and the family Punicaceae. It is a thorny deciduous shrub or small tree with strong emergence of shoots at its base, which reaches a height of 8 m. It is included among the first fruits that man domesticated, while in the Bible it is mentioned. Pomegranate grows in medium soils, which are acidic to alkaline, and drain well, and in areas where there is no spring or autumn frosts. It blooms showing three types of flowers, male, hermaphroditic, and a type of flower in between. The male and hermaphroditic flowers contribute to the self-fertilization of the plant, while the number of the latter in relation to that of the former largely determines the amount of production. The fruit of the plant, the Pomegranate, is a botanical plant that is formed by a number of drupes, and ripens from the beginning to the middle of Autumn - depending on the variety. Characteristic of Pomegranate is that it withstands drought and relative salinity but with negative effects on the production of Pomegranates.

It is offered at a price determined by the particular characteristics of the plant, such as the size of the pot, its height, age and shape. Large trees are also available for sale (and planting) upon prior arrangement. In any case, the price or prices listed are indicative.
