Yellow Water Lily (Nymphaea 'Marliacea Chromatella'-syn. Nymphaea x marliacea 'Chromatella') Aquatic Plant - Aquatic, Pond & Wetland Plants. Perennial deciduous herbaceous and rhizomatous aquatic plant of considerable decorative value, suitable for medium to deep ponds. It is included in the genus Nymphaea which belongs to the family Nymphaeaceae. The now classic hybrid variety 'Marliacea Chromatella' - of unknown parentage - is a product of the breeding work of the 19th century French lawyer and horticulturalist Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac. The variety entered the market in the 1887, a few years before the breeder set up the famous water lily display at the Exposition Universelle in the French capital in 1899. The moderate growth rate Nymphaea x marliacea 'Chromatella' has oval copper-green leaves when young and green when mature. It blooms profusely from early Summer to early Autumn, with wonderful double, fragrant cup-shaped flowers, which have Yellow petals with yellow stamens. It is extremely resistant and easy to grow if planted in the right environment. The Yellow Water Lily (Nymphaea 'Marliacea Chromatella') is propagated by offshoots or rhizome division. The plant is placed in ponds 45 to 75 cm deep. As for the Exposition Universelle of 1899 in Paris, it is worth noting that it was a source of inspiration for the great French impressionist painter Claude Monet, who depicted plants in his Les Nymphéas series of works.
