It is one of the most attractive ornamental plants, as it gives a special dramatic or light tone to the garden and landscape. Calamagrostis x acutiflora is reported as a natural hybrid of C. epigejos (native to Europe, Asia and Africa) and C. arundinacea (native to Eurasia, China and India) that appeared in the Hamburg Botanic Garden. It was introduced to the market as an ornamental in 1950 by the German nurseryman Karl Foerster. It is an herbaceous, perennial, evergreen plant, small to medium height and fast-growing. The dominant ornamental feature of 'Karl Foerster' is its greenish leaves (coppery brown in winter) with stunning-looking, spike-like, creamy-pink inflorescences, which appear in mid-summer and remain on the plant until winter, when they are now brownish in colour. The variety 'Karl Foerster' gives hardy and easy-to-grow plants that thrive in all types of soil, acidic to alkaline, which drain very well. It is used in both gardening and landscape architecture to create, among other things, dry landscape compositions (xeriscaping). It is highly resistant to cold, drought and high temperatures, and is not affected by salt spray, making it suitable for planting in coastal areas. At the end of the winter it is recommended that the plant be actively pruned to encourage new growth.
